The synthetic beauty of Yvette Kaiser-Smith’s life-size crocheted fiberglass and polyester resin sculptures speak to identity shaped by human biology and social behavior. Stretched and twisted into gravity-defying hollows and bulbous curves, her works fuse formal metaphors for the female body and cellular patterns with the hand-labor traditionally associated with women’s domestic roles. Her glistening membranes derive their tension from  multiple contradictions — strength/weakness, protection/vulnerability, beauty/ugliness— that deftly articulate both feminist and human concerns.
