Lisa Boumstein-Smalley Born in Chicago, IL, 1976, raised in Omaha, NE Education: School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, MFA, 2003 School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, BFA, 2001 Lives in Chicago, IL Fascination with accumulation and fragmentation, inertia and movement are the cornerstones to Lisa Boumstein-Smalley’s mirage drawings on Plexiglas. Natural images — an iceberg; a lunar crater; a waterfall — are drawn through a fastidious network of interlocking marks. The palpable textures of her surfaces are in constant battle with her images’ seemingly fugitive appearances. Drawn marks appear to rise above her surfaces as if they were particles of dust drawn together by static electricity, suspending the viewer in a state of purgatory between terra firma and the atmosphere. upcoming exhibitions |
