Paul Kass Born in Chicago, IL, 1967, raised in St. Louis, MO Education: San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA, BFA, 1990 Lives in Chicago, IL Paul Kass assembles ideas and disassembles familiar perceptions. His sculptures and installations re-purpose utilitarian materials — drywall compound, vinyl, sandpaper, push pins — into beguiling contradictions of visual, spatial and structural logic. An abstract painting is not created through conventional means. Instead, canvas is methodically torn into even strips which are then stacked to build a freestanding wall. Is it still a painting, or is it now a sculpture, or even architecture? The ambiguities of Kass’s works create new guides for achieving equilibrium. upcoming exhibitions
