Barbara Cooper Born in Philadelphia, PA, 1949 Education: Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, MFA, 1977 Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH, BFA, 1974 Lives in Chicago, IL Barbara Cooper observes how organic forms — the surge of lava; the creep of a glacier; the flow of water— respond to the stresses they withstand and the obstacles they confront. Mirroring nature’s efficiency, she uses the waste product of the milling process, discarded scraps of wood veneer, to build her works from the inside out, echoing the slow building processes found in the natural world. Constant growth is a conversion of the small, the fragile, into something of strength and resilience as the individual establishes a state of balance with the forces of its environment upcoming exhibitions
